| UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid v AC Milan (FULL HIGHLIGHTS). |
Cristiano Ronaldo scored the opener and supplied the second goal as Real Madrid netted twice in two minutes to complete a 2-0 win over AC Milan in a battle of the Champions League heavyweights.
Jose Mourinho's side avenged their 3-2 loss to Milan at the Bernabeu a year ago, but were helped by some dramatically poor defending from the visitors.
Pato clattered Xabi Alonso and Ronaldo somehow managed to slip a free-kick through the Milan wall from the edge of the box on 12 minutes.
Visiting keeper Marco Amelia had no chance as it nestled low in his left-hand corner. Amelia had a fine match for Milan, but was soon picking the ball out of the net for a second time.
The Italian side were reeling when they fell two behind only one minute and five seconds later.
Ronaldo supplied Mesut Ozil and his shot deflected wickedly off Daniele Bonera before spinning high into the air and over the grounded Amelia, who looked horrified.
Real top Group G with nine points from their opening three games with Milan on four points alongside Ajax after the Dutch side completed a 2-1 home win over Auxerre.
Milan and Real meet again at the San Siro on November 3 when the Spanish side can secure their place in the last 16.
No teams have won more continental titles than Madrid's nine and Milan's seven.
Mourinho is bidding to become the first manager to win the European Cup with three different clubs after his successes at Porto and Internazionale.
He must first address Real's faltering form in Europe's premier club competition.
It has been seven years since Real last reached the last eight of the tournament and nine years since they won it with that stirring 2-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen at Hampden Park in 2002.
After assuming such an early grip on the match, it seemed that Real would add to their tally but despite rattling in 23 shots at the visiting goal, they had to settle for Ronaldo and Ozil's early contributions.
Milan had their chances in the first period, but paid dearly for failing to press the home side tightly enough, which is easier said than done against a side of Real's calibre, especially when six of the starting line-up is over the age of 30.
Andrea Pirlo saw Iker Casillas tip a wicked free-kick from 25 yards on to his bar on 27 minutes before the ongoing Dutch midfielder Clarence Seedorf, a European Cup winner with Ajax, Real and Milan, hammered over from Pirlo's pass after a poor first touch.
Amelia then dived to divert a Ronaldo piledriver around a post on 35 minutes and repeated the act by saving from the impressive Ozil four minutes before the interval.
Real assumed control in the second half, but were let down by their own finishing.
Gonzalo Higuain headed Angle Di Maria's cross into the arms of Amelia with a free header on 52 minutes, while Ronaldo should have added the third when he knocked Marcelo's pass wide of the goal twenty minutes from time.
The visiting side introduced Filippo Inzaghi for his 80th appearance to replace Pato, but he could not add to his 45 career goals in the tournament.
Mourinho gave a faltering Ronaldinho a sympathetic hug when he made way for Robinho on 71 minutes, but the on-loan Manchester City player was denied a goal by a fine stop from Casillas on 81 minutes.
